Fix Hard Disk with Bad Sector

Continuing the previous article "Hard Disk Conditions Check Your Computer", this article will discuss about how to improve if the hard disk bad sector affected. If you do not understand what it is and how bad sector hardisk check conditions, then please read the article.

Bad Sector in the disk in general there are 2 types of mechanical / physical and software. Bad mechanical sector, such as surface plates, namely a data storage hard drive is physically damaged due to eg scratches, dust, loud impact, and so forth. Meanwhile, bad sector software can occur when hard drives are busy sudden death, drop out of cash and so forth.

For Bad Sector in the form of physical damage (mechanical), then it is outside this discussion, as it usually can not (very difficult) fixed. If you still have warranty then the new should be exchanged. But if the bad sector in the form of software, the possibility can still be improved. So the discussion here focuses only bad in the software sector.

How do I fix Bad Sector?
! .. Important information .. !

If the disk is exposed to a bad sector, then the first step is to save the data that is important, both in the store in another hard drive, the CD or copy to the other. Before and following the steps below make sure the data is important in the backup.

First step: Try to format the drive or hard drive bad sector which is the usual format, for example, through right-click in Windows Explorer and select the format. Sometimes this can remove the bad sector.

If the initial step is not successful then I can try some free software with some of the following:

1. Easeus Partition Manager

This free software than helpful to create / edit the disk partition (Partition Magic look similar), can also be used to remove the bad sector. The steps as follows:

  1. Easeus partition Run Program Manager
  2. Select the drive that some have bad sectornya (to ensure no bad sector can also scan through the easeus this with click right drive Select the menu Advanced> Check Partition)
  3. Right-click, and select Delete
  4. When information appears, then select "Delete Partition and Delete Data"
  5. If you are finished, click the Apply
  6. Wait until finished.

Note that this step can only be done to drive than the windows. And make sure data is always secured / backup first.

Easeus partition manager can be downloaded / obtained from the following link :
http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm (be sure to download the Home Edition (free))

2. HDD Low Level Format Tools

With this software, the disk can be in the format in depth (on the term low-level format). Please note that with the low-level format, then all data on the disk will be lost, and can not return it in / on the recovery again. But how this will usually be more effective the bad sector.

Because the hard drive will be in the format entirely, so that hard drives will be in the process must be in the format in other computers (in the loose and installed another computer). Or if you have 2 hard drives on the computer, the hard drives that do not contain windows in the format. Next step:

  1. Run HDD Low Level Format tools
  2. Hardisk will select the format. Of course that does not contain the operating system windows. Then click Continue
  3. Select the tab "LOW-LEVEL-Format", and please read the warning appear
  4. If you are unsure, then click on "FORMAT THIS DEVICE", and wait until the process is complete.

In addition to hard drives (SATA HDD Low level format can be obtained / downloaded from the link below:
HDD Low Level Format Tool version direct download http://hddguru.com/download/software/HDDGURU-Low-Level-Format-Tool/LLFsetup.2.36.1181.exe

3. Using the Software's default hard drive vendor.

Usually vendors such as Seagate and Western Digital, also provides software to analyze or repair hardisk. For hard drives seagate, they can download tools such as Seatools for Windows or DOS. whereas for the Western Digital tools can be downloaded "Wertern Digital Diagnostics lifeguard."

For example, to Western Digital, facilities include a "WRITE zeros" to fix errors such as bad sectors. For Seagate, so the install, then in the Help section already described enough detail about the benefits and use.

Buying tips and help

If you have not already purchased a CD drive please see our CD buying tips section help before continuing.

How to determine the type of CD drive

Additional information about how to determine the type of CD drive can be found on document CH000495.

Before getting started

  1. Ensure you have a working bootable floppy diskette with CD-ROM drivers.
  2. Write down important information from the top or bottom of the CD-ROM such as the Model Number, Serial Number and specifications.
  3. Ensure you are familiar with ESD and its potential dangers.
  4. When physically installing the CD drive, ensure the computer is powered down and unplugged.

Set Jumpers

Before installing the CD drive it is important that the drive have the jumpers appropriately set to Master / Slave or Cable Select. For example, if this drive is being attached to the same cable as your hard disk drive, the CD-ROM drive will need to be setup as the SLAVE drive and the Hard Disk Drive will need to be setup as Master or Dual Master.

Note: If possible, it is recommended that if you are installing a CD-R or CD-RW drive that the drive be setup as the Master drive on the second IDE/EIDE interface. This could help in preventing a buffer underrun when creating a CD.

Attach cables

The CD-ROM should have three types of cables connected to it. Start first with the smallest of the three types of cables, the CD-ROM audio cable (or sound card cable). When connecting this cable to the CD-ROM drive it should be a 3 or 4 pin cable connection (see above picture). Verify that the location that you are connecting this cable to is NOT the jumpers on the back of the drive; while it may be possible for the cable to connect to these pins, this could cause additional issues.

Next, connect the 40-pin IDE/EIDE interface cable (large gray ribbon cable) to the back of the CD-ROM drive. This cable will generally have one side of the cable that is red or blue indicating PIN 1. This side of the cable almost always points to where the power connects to the CD-ROM drive.

Finally, connect the power cable to the back of the CD-ROM drive. This cable is generally keyed therefore should only connect to the computer one-way.

Once the computer cables have been connected to the back of the CD-ROM drive, connect the opposite ends of the IDE/EIDE interface cable and the audio cable to their appropriate locations. The audio cable will generally connect to one of the following locations: Sound Card / Motherboard (when onboard sound present) / DVD decoder card.

BIOS setup

Once the CD drive has been connected to the computer, place the case back onto the computer and connect the keyboard, monitor and power to the computer (we recommend that you do not connect all the cables yet, if problems are experienced you may have to disconnect all the cables again).

Once connected, turn on the computer and enter BIOS setup. Verify that the IDE device is setup as Auto or CD Drive. Once verified, save the settings and reboot the computer.

Additional help and information about BIOS can be found on our BIOS page.

Software setup

IDE/EIDE CD-ROM drives generally only require the one or two CD-ROM drives for the drives to work.

If you are using MS-DOS you will need the MS-DOS driver and MSCDEX. Additional information about loading and setting these drivers up on your computer can be found on our CD-ROM driver page.

If you are using Windows 9x, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP it is likely that if the drive is properly installed that it will be automatically detected and installed when the computer first boots up.

CD Drivers can be found on our CD-ROM / CD-R / CD-RW / DVD drivers page.
Computer operating system information can be found on our operating systems page.

Troubleshooting

If additional issues are encountered during or after the installation of the CD-ROM drive, please refer to our main CD-ROM drive page for additional help and information.

If additional issues are encountered during or after the installation of the CD-R drive, please refer to our main CD-R drive page for additional help and information.

If additional issues are encountered during or after the installation of the CD-RW drive, please refer to our main CD-RW drive page for additional help and information.
